DATA AVAILABILITY

Results from the 2016 PSS are available in the form of:

  • an electronic publication available free of charge on the ABS website
  • access to microdata through a Detailed Microdata product available via the DataLab and a TableBuilder product available via the ABS website, and
  • special data services on request to meet specific information requirements.

This section outlines the products and services currently available and how to access them.

PUBLICATION

The publication Personal Safety, Australia, 2016 (cat. no. 4906.0) was released in November 2017 and is available free of charge on the ABS website.

Data presented in the publication provides a summary of the main findings from the topics collected in the survey, including experiences of physical or sexual assault, emotional abuse or violence by a partner, sexual harassment, stalking and experiences of sexual or physical abuse before the age of 15.

Data tables are available in spreadsheet format from the Downloads Tab of the publication. These tables are predominantly national level data tables, although some tables show state and territory results. These tables include more detailed information about each of the topics summarised in the key findings. Estimates, RSEs of estimates, proportions and MoEs of proportions are presented for most publication tables.

SUPPORTING MATERIAL

Supporting material is available to assist data users in analysing the data from the survey. The following are able to be downloaded from the Downloads tab of this User Guide:
  • A representation of the computer assisted interview questionnaire
  • Prompt cards used
  • Data Item list containing details on the available data

ACCESS TO MICRODATA

For clients wanting to produce their own tabulations of survey estimates a TableBuilder product is available. TableBuilder is an online tool for creating tables from ABS survey data, where variables can be selected for cross-tabulation.

For clients wanting to conduct manipulations of survey estimates, a Detailed Microdata file is available. Detailed Microdata files in the DataLab contain unit records relating to the survey respondents and can be used to undertake in-depth analyses.

For more details about the products and how to apply for access, refer to the Microdata Entry Page on the ABS website.

SPECIAL DATA SERVICES

The statistics presented in the Personal Safety, Australia 2016 (cat. no. 4906.0) are indicative of the extensive range of data available from the survey and demonstrate the analytical potential of the survey results.

The ABS offers specialist consultancy services to assist clients with more complex statistical information needs. Clients may wish to have the unit record data analysed according to their own needs, or required tables incorporating data items and populations as requested by them. Tables and other analytical outputs can be made available electronically or in printed form. However, as the level of detail or disaggregation increases with detailed requests the number of contributors to data cells decreases. This may result in some requested information not being able to be released due to confidentiality or sampling variability constraints. All specialist consultancy services attract a service charge, and clients will be provided with a quote before information is supplied.

If the information you require is not available from the publication or the data cubes, please contact the National Information and Referral Service (NIRS) on 1300 135 070 (international callers +61 2 9268 4909) or via email client.services@abs.gov.au. The NIRS can be contacted from anywhere in Australia between 8:30am and 5:00pm (AEST) Monday to Friday. The ABS Privacy Policy (www.abs.gov.au/privacy) outlines how the ABS will handle any personal information that you provide to us.
